My Jewish education primarily revolved around Ashkenazi traditions, emphasizing the Holocaust and the significance of Israel. Throughout my upbringing, I participated in Hebrew school, Jewish summer camps, and youth groups, all of which reinforced a singular narrative. However, it wasn't until I reached college that I encountered a broader spectrum of Jewish experiences.
During my studies, I met Sephardic Jews and delved into Jewish Studies courses that opened my eyes to diverse cultural perspectives within the Jewish community. This exposure prompted me to reconsider the narratives I had been taught and to appreciate the rich tapestry of Jewish history that includes the vibrant traditions of Sephardic Jews and their unique contributions to Jewish identity.
Traveling to Spain further deepened this understanding, as I explored the historical roots of Sephardic Jews and their enduring legacy. This journey has inspired me to advocate for a more inclusive approach to Jewish education that embraces the multiplicity of experiences within our community.
